I recently ran into a career counseling journal assignment that talked about the barriers that ex-criminal offenders and under represented groups face. I’m going to share that journal entry next but first I wanted to give a brief explanation of Donald Super’s career theory. If you follow this link you will be brought to a New Zealand website that explains the theory in pretty good depth.
The key points to take away from Donald Super:
- Our Self Concept changes over time
- Career Development is lifelong (like normal human development)
- We grow our skills, we explore opportunities, we establish ourselves, we evaluate, and we eventually decline
- Our Self Concept is made up of our internal experiences and the social environment that we are a part of (see Arch of Determination)
