Super’s theory

I recently ran into a career counseling journal assignment that talked about the barriers that ex-criminal offenders and under represented groups face. I’m going to share that journal entry next but first I wanted to give a brief explanation of Donald Super’s career theory. If you follow this link you will be brought to a New Zealand website that explains the theory in pretty good depth.

The key points to take away from Donald Super:

  1. Our Self Concept changes over time
  2. Career Development is lifelong (like normal human development)
  3. We grow our skills, we explore opportunities, we establish ourselves, we evaluate, and we eventually decline
  4. Our Self Concept is made up of our internal experiences and the social environment that we are a part of (see Arch of Determination)
